Taylor Sift Crosses Back To Country Music

You have to admit it: Taylor’s gone a little bit pop. Ok, a lot pop. Her “country” album, Red, is atop the Billboard 200 albums chart for a fifth consecutive week. Not to mention the pop performances, pop awards, and pop sound she’s produced in the last two months. It’s safe to say our little curly headed country girl has completely crossed over.

Not so fast. I think Taylor really is a country girl at heart. Just watch her latest video – dubbed “A Holiday Gift From Taylor Swift” – and tell me she’s forever a pop star. I’m not buying it.

The video is long, but I watched the entire 15 minutes and remembered when Taylor did this sort of thing all the time. Granted, there weren’t fancy camera cutaways, microphones, and fans sitting on her living room floor, but the concept of Taylor singing acoustic remains the same.

It’s hard to argue her recent pop success and say that she should come back over and strictly do country – and in all honesty, she probably shouldn’t. But the world fell in love with this vulnerable 16 year old girl who fantasized about high school and normal boys. She may have gained a huge pop following, but she’s slowly losing her country audience.

Maybe if she dropped the choreographed sets, the pop star boyfriends, over produced albums she’d gain a few fans back. Then again, she’s quite literally on top of the world and I can’t say I don’t listen to her music even with the fluff. But I also can’t say I respect her much either. Although after watching her holiday gift (below), she’s gained a little back from me.
