Between the upcoming wedding and the ever changing hair, the world may have forgotten that Miley Cyrus is a singer at heart. Well, she reminded us. Pop princess, Miley Cyrus, took a break from mainstream and brought her music back old school by releasing a cover video for Dolly Parton’s 1974 hit song “Jolene.”

The setting was simple: Miley – barefoot in a long, flowing skirt – outside with an acoustic style band singing the haunting lyrics to one of Dolly’s biggest hits. I don’t know about you, but I was pretty mesmerized. She effortlessly belts the chorus and coddles the vintage mic while swaying side to side, truly looking like she enjoyed the music.

The video, released Christmas Eve, was recorded a while ago as part of Miley’s “Backyard Sessions,” not to mention her long hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun giving it away. “Jolene” is not the first acoustic cover the 20-year-old singer has released. Others from last summer’s session included Bob Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go,” and James Shelton’s “Lilac Wine.”

Miley has always leaned a little country in her voice considering her background, ahem: Billy Ray Cyrus; but does this new country cover mean her upcoming album will reflect her background? I certainly hope so. Truthfully, I never bought Miley as the next Britney Spears. The new Dolly Parton? Probably not. But you’ve got to admit: country suits Miley.
